A Meirionnydd butcher has won an award for making the best sausages in the UK.
Married couple Diane and Paul Wellings from London House Stores and Spar in Dyffryn Ardudwy, who have been running the business for the past 10 years, spoke of their pride at the win this week.
Diane said: “It’s not only great for us, but also for the area to have scooped such a prestigious prize.
“The sausages are made by our member of staff, Mark Hughes.”
Diane would not divulge the secret of what makes their sausages the best in Britain.
Organisers of the awards, retail butchery specialist Dalziel and The Institute of Meat, launched The Great British Butcher Awards in February as a celebration of innovation and excellence of meat products in retail butchers’ shops.
Danny Upson, retail sales director at Dalziel, said: “We’ve had a fantastic response to the awards with entries coming from over 100 butchers all over Britain, from Exeter to Aberdeen.
“With more diverse line up of meat products than ever before, this year’s GBB Awards list is peppered with some truly unique and innovative products, and the standards have been excellent.”
The team of expert judges included chefs, meat consumer fans, industry experts and food technologists.
Outstanding taste and quality are honoured above all else, with no regard to branding or packaging.
Whether it is a steak, sausage, marinated steak or ready meal, all products are removed from their wrapper and packaging before being tasted by the judges.
“It’s great to see the passion, innovation and creativity behind many locally loved retail butchers’ meat products.
“Equally, it’s vital for the development of the industry that we get behind our favourite butchers and encourage their craft, which is one of the world’s oldest skills.”
London House Stores was not the only local winner with Cigydd Bala Butchers scooping an award for Best Burger.
