THE manager of an Aberystwyth coffee shop embroiled in a row over the Welsh language has said they are investigating and have contacted the customer concerned.

The Cambrian News revealed this week that well-known opera star Gwawr Edwards took to social media to tell of her shock after a customer at the Starbucks branch on Upper Great Darkgate Street in Aberystwyth was allegedly told to “speak English or get out” after trying to order in Welsh.

Steve Whetton, manager of the Starbucks branch in Aberystwyth told the Cambrian News: “We take this allegation very seriously as any incident of this sort is unacceptable at Starbucks.

"We have contacted the customer concerned to request details for our investigation.

"We are committed to being an involved part of the local Welsh community.

"As such we have a large number of fluent Welsh speakers in our team and have worked to support local causes since we opened in 2014.

"We always want to create a warm and welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy.”

Welsh language campaigners told the Cambrian News that the comments were “serious” and “insulting”.
