A Porthmadog fishmonger who has only been in business a year has been named the best in Wales.

Simon Herbert of Blas y Môr has been named the best fishmonger in Wales by judges at the Welsh Independent Retail Awards.

The Porthmadog High Street fishmongers has only been in business a little over a year, but scooped the prestigious prize at a black-tie ceremony in Cardiff.

Mr Herbert was unable to attend the event, but this week spoke of his pride at winning the award.

He said: “It’s incredibly humbling to win this award. The shop is so well supported. I couldn’t ask for more.”

Blas y Môr wasn’t the only local winner as Criccieth hairdressers Moncrieffe Hair was named Hair Salon of the Year on the night.

The Welsh Independent Retail Awards acknowledge the contributions of the country’s independent retails to the overall economy as well as the wide range of diversity that is present in this sector.

They also recognised individuals that own smaller chains, whose work is often overshadowed in the bigger landscape.
