CALLS are being made for a “dangerous” road near Porthmadog to be realigned after a car crash left two women injured.

Part of the A487 near Porthmadog was closed for more than four hours last Wednesday after a two vehicle crash just before 10am.

Two females suffered injuries in the collision and were taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd by ambulance crews.

Cllr Steve Churchman said more pressure needs to be put on the North Wales Trunk Road Agency to ensure the road is safer for drivers and cyclists.

He said: “I didn’t witness the crash, but I heard it was a pretty nasty one and I’m not surprised as the road is terrible and extremely dangerous.

“Over the last few years I have been pushing the North Wales Trunk Road Agency to do something about this part of the A487 before someone is seriously injured.

“The alignment along there is appalling and needs to be addressed.

“Also, part of the road is extremely narrow which makes it even more dangerous for motorists.

“There was a bid in place for funding to be used to make the corrections on this road, but I believe it has failed which is extremely disappointing.

“However, I think the time has come to put pressure on the trunk agency to get something done about this road, especially after this recent crash.

“I have been chasing them all summer to see what had happened with the bid and it was a real shame to hear that it had failed.

“It’s not only motorists we need to keep safe either, it’s also cyclists, there is a turning to a national cycling route through to Golan along that road, so their safety also worries me.

“The Welsh Government need to act quickly as at the moment it’s a disaster waiting to happen.”

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “The bid for improvements to this section of road will be considered alongside other potential projects for the next financial year.

“We constantly review safety on trunk roads and will consider the police report for this incident when we receive it.”
