There have been multiple studies published on the negative health impacts of loneliness and depression (which can even lead to chronic illness and death).
Therefore the irony of only permitting one half-hour weekly visit, by one family member to a relative in a care home, is not lost on me. This rule is callous and will cause further distress to people who have been denied access to their loved ones. How does a family decide who is to be granted privileged visiting rights?
And what about friends and grandchildren? To exclude them is another tier of cruelty imposed.
The residents who used to enjoy trips out have also been denied their liberty, at a stage in life when time is limited and precious. It is a crazy society that is willing to inflict mental pain and illness on its most vulnerable in order to ‘look after them’ and keep them ‘safe’.
