A shire horse bred near Aberystwyth has scooped a major prize at the Horse of the Year Show.

Melindwr Lady Olwen, bred at Melindwr Shire Horses in Goginan by Idloes Roberts, won the British Ridden Heavy Horse Championship title at the Horse of the Year Show, held in Birmingham this month.

Mr Roberts, who has owned the Melindwr facility for 11 years, said he was “incredibly proud” of the achievement.

Melindwr Lady Olwen was sold three years ago, but Mr Roberts said he regularly keeps in touch with the owners of all the horses he breeds.

“I am absolutely elated,” he told the Cambrian News.

“This is definitely a first for Aberystwyth as far as I can remember.

“It is a massive accolade for the horse and for us.”
