WHILE Welsh football legend Ian Rush helped deliver the Champions League trophy via motorboat to Cardiff yesterday, we delved into our archives and found the Liverpool legend made a very different kind of public appearance 30 years ago – in Aberystwyth.

These pictures from a June 1987 edition of the Cambrian News show how Rush, who played for Juventus, the Italian giants who will take on Real Madrid on Saturday for the ultimate prize in European club football, visited Ceredigion for the opening of sports shop Canolfan Chwaraeon Aberystwyth.

A 24-year-old Rush, who won the Champions League twice as a player, flew in by helicopter to officially open the new-look store and sign autographs for hundreds of adoring fans.
