Madam,

I refer to your headline of 28 December, ‘Petition to keep buses on the square’ in Dolgellau.

In November, Gwynedd Council consulted on five options for moving the bus terminus.

How many of the 364 people who signed the petition understood that none of the options involved removing the bus stop in Eldon Square? Unfortunately, the flyer sent by Gwynedd Council to every household in Dolgellau failed to mention this key fact. At the public consultation, an officer of Gwynedd Council told me that “doing nothing is not an option”, so we can assume that one of the five options will definitely go ahead. The common sense solution would be a bus terminus on the Marian which is just a few steps from Eldon Square. Those people who want to be dropped off or picked up in Eldon Square will still be able to do this. The relocation of the bus terminus will reduce pollution, enhance safety and allow further improvements to the town square – all of which will benefit the local community and the visitors upon which the local economy depends.

Historically, resistance to town planning has helped to produce the unique character of Dolgellau, but there are times when a more progressive approach is necessary. We look forward to hearing about the results of the consultation and Gwynedd Council’s plans to implement its preferred solution.

Yours etc,

Mark Lacey, Vice Chair, Discover Dolgellau.
