Sailors’ Institute
A BIG thank you is extended to all who attended the coffee morning on 13 July, and made it another success.
The treasurer was able to bank £231 towards the general running costs of the institute.
When they were striving to find funds to restore the building, way back in the 90s, committee member David Griffith, persuaded the Barmouth WI ladies to organise the first coffee morning for them.
That was held on 23 November 1999 and because they did such a good job, they became known as David’s Angels.
They have held a coffee morning every year since and some of those original angels still help, either serving coffee or baking cakes.
Without the new angels, these mornings would not take place - thank you all.
Other fundraising events back in those times were car boots, helium balloons, pub quiz, finger buffet, Old Tyme dancing, guess the number of matchsticks used to make a replica of Barmouth Bridge.
Thanks to loyal supporters and grant aid, they achieved their goal and are proud to have a historic 127-year-old maritime building restored to a standard that will survive for many years to come.
Visit Wales has recognised their efforts and they once again have Visitor Attraction status.
Also this year, their full Museum Accreditation status was renewed.
Two feathers in the cap for a small visitor attraction.
If anyone would like to support Ty Gwyn, the other visitor attraction just along the quay, by giving of a couple of hours of your time, please pop in any afternoon and put yourself on the rota.
It can be a very interesting and enjoyable experience promoting Barmouth’s maritime history.
