LINDA Hood, a society member, gave a talk on ‘Bungalows’.
From the thatched bungalows in the northern hills of India, built for colonials as retreats from oppressive heat, the fashion emerged in the 1870s for bungalows by the sea on the south coast of England.
These were huge and gave convenient access to the health benefits of sea-bathing for the very rich.
More modest bungalows appeared as the government ‘Homes fit for Heroes’ initiative awarded grants and £5 could buy a plot.
Linda showed slides of architectural plans and photographs illustrating the development in styles of bungalow, many examples being found in Llanon and Llanybydder.
Nigel Callaghan will give a talk on ‘Orrible Murders’ at the next meeting on 2 October.
