Garden Club
THE Chairperson opened the evening’s programme with a warm welcome to a substantial audience of 29 members.
Apologies were received from a further four members.
Business consisted mainly of arrangements for the imminent Annual Plant Sale and the club outing in June. Some mail had been received and local news passed on.
The speaker for the evening was introduced. Angela Paxton facilitates volunteers for the Gerddi Bro Dyfi community Gardens in Machynlleth. Now 10 years old, the gardens set out to be a therapeutic occupation, run on an organic principals and a space for nature.
A community survey established that an orchard was required on the two acre site (near Y Plas). Insects and other wildlife are catered for with an edible hedge, meadow and nectar border, including an area for drought tolerant plants.
Alys Fowler, TV gardener, has been a guest. Community funding for three years has enabled workshops and activities for children. Future plans may include certification for pruning, hedge lying and organising educational trips. A vote of thanks for this informative talk was given and refreshments were then served.
