A MUM has raised hundreds of pounds for a Bronglais Hospital ward which gave “out-of-this-world” treatment to her 12-year-old daughter who broke her neck in a pool accident in Clarach.
Donna Llewellyn took on a 1.7-mile swim from Clarach to Aberystwyth last month to raise money for the Angharad ward at Bronglais Hospital which gave her daughter “excellent care”.
Donna’s daughter Milly Llewellyn-Charlton fractured her neck and moved three discs after diving into a pool at Glan y Môr Leisure Centre and landing on her head while on holiday last October.
Milly, 12, has made such a good recovery that she was able to take part in the event on 13 August, but she still continues to attend hospital every two weeks.
Milly spent a few weeks in a neck and body brace at Angharad Ward following the incident, and Donna said that raising money for the ward and its staff was “important” because of the excellent help she and her daughter received.
“The care we were given while we were there was out of this world, we couldn’t ask for anything better,” she said.
“Now it was my time to thank them for all their hard work.”
Donna, 35, lives in Kenilworth, near Coventry in Warwickshire, but has a caravan in Clarach that the family visit “frequently throughout the year”.
Donna completed the swim in good sea conditions in just one hour with the help of lifeguards Morgan Williams and Cari in Clarach, who kept an eye on the swim until they were within site of fellow lifeguards Max Glasser and Mathew Hugh at Aberystwyth North Beach.
She began the swim in Clarach at 2.10pm, landing back on Aberystwyth North Beach at 3.10pm.
She said that initially she didn’t think Milly would be able to take part as her neck “still wasn’t stable enough”, but her daughter did join in.
The fund-raising efforts have so far raised £245, with donations to the cause still open.
