PLANS for a major jazz festival which “could put Lampeter on the map” might be at risk after councillors expressed doubts over the idea.
Cllr Adrian Kendon presented his ideas to other councillors at a town council meeting last Thursday, in which he argued for a music festival along the line of others in Wales such as the Brecon Jazz Festival, Fishguard Folk Festival and the Tenby Blues Festival.
Cllr Kendon said he would expect the festival to attract between 500 and 1,000 people, and suggested it take place on the weekend following the Lampeter Food Festival, which will be held on Saturday, 23 July.
“It could become a real calendar event and put Lampeter on the map in terms of music,” said Cllr Kendon.
“We could apply for a £15,000 grant from the Welsh Arts Council and, apart from the artists’ costs, it would be relatively inexpensive to run.”
Councillors were largely supportive of the festival idea, but were cautious over both the proposed dates and committing too much to the idea.
