THE University of Wales Trinity Saint David is preparing to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first rugby match in Wales which was played in Lampeter.
The Rev Prof Rowland Williams – who was Vice Principal of St David’s College, Lampeter at the time – introduced the game to the college’s students with the first competitive match played against Llandovery College on the university’s playing fields in Lampeter in 1866.
To mark this historic milestone, UWTSD Lampeter rugby teams will be playing in a new commemorative jersey this season.
The design replicates the jersey worn by the university in the centenary match against a Wales select XV in 1966 featuring stars such as Barry John, Carwyn James and Delme Thomas.
The traditional black and yellow hoops (the colours of Saint David) are complemented by a touch of scarlet on the sleeves to mark the significance of Wales.
Reference to the 150-year celebration is made on the left sleeve with the new logo that has been developed by the university for these commemorative celebrations.
