THE number of Covid-19 cases recorded across Wales today is less than a tenth of that reported this time last week.

Wales recorded 22,317 new cases last Tuesday, 4 January, over a 48 hour period, but latest figures released this lunch time by Public Health Wales show that 2,176 new cases have been recorded nationwide over the latest 24 hour period.

The rate of infection across Wales has fallen for a third consecutive day, currently standing at 1,780.5 cases per 100,000 population.

Ceredigion has recorded 34 new cases today with 55 being recorded in Pembrokeshire and 112 in Carmarthenshire.

Gwynedd has recorded 84 new cases with 48 being recorded in Powys.

Four new deaths have been recorded nationwide, taking the total number of Covid-19 related fatalities to 6,654 since the start of the pandemic.

One of the deaths recorded today has been in the Hywel Dda Health Board region of west Wales, which covers Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, taking the total number of deaths to 646.

Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board in north Wales has also recorded one new death, with its total now standing at 1,150.

No deaths have been recorded in Powys with its total remaining at 86.
