Liverpool FC’s Jurgen Klopp has been invited to Porthmadog to highlight the lack of resources in women’s football.

The Champions League and Premier League winning manager has been invited to visit Prothmadog’s successful girl’s team by Dwyfor Meirionnydd MS, Mabon ap Gwynfor to see just how to run a football team!

Mr ap Gwynfor has been working with the girl’s team in Porthmadog to get funding and equipment for the successful youth football team.

Writing to the German football coach, Mr ap Gwynfor explained the success of women athletes such as Emma Raducanu was leading to an increased interest in women’s sport.

However he felt that there was not always the support in rural areas for young women to get into sport.

Clwb Pêl-droed Merched Porthmadog, attracts players from Barmouth, Dolgellau and Tywyn, however, on a rainy training day some players have to make a three-hour round trip to their nearest all-weather pitch in Penygroes.

Mr ap Gwynfor said: “Here in north west Wales, we have some fantastic women’s and girls’ football teams.

“As the local elected representative, I have been looking at avenues available to ensure that they get access to funds in order to buy the equipment needed to improve their skills, and have challenged the government to ensure equitable share of funds for sports development.”

He added: “Unfortunately, in an impoverished and rural area like this, the equipment and the grounds needed to allow those girls to develop their skills further are impossible to find.

“We need the investments here in north west Wales in order for our amazing and skilful young girls to flourish into the best footballers they can be. Sadly, too many young girls are denied that opportunity because of the accident of birth.”
