Rotary club
THREE local Rotary Clubs organise the annual Rotary Across Wales Walk to raise funds for their own local, national and international charitable causes. The walk also encourages participants to raise money for their own chosen charities. As a result large amounts of money have been raised over the years by both Rotary and individual walkers. The walk, which has been going since the 1970s, was hosted for the first time by the local Rotary Clubs of Newtown, Llanidloes and Machynlleth in 2006. The Rotary Clubs adopted the walk to ensure its survival and this year celebrate their 10th anniversary as event organisers. Walkers can opt to walk the full distance of 42 miles from Glandyfi (south of Machynlleth) across to the Anchor, Shropshire. Shorter distances of 26, 16 or eight miles can be walked to suit all ages and capabilities. Many families enter the eight-mile stage at ‘Devils Elbow’, enjoying the love-ly flat section through to the finish line. There are 15 checkpoints along the route supporting walkers with water and a variety of fruit, sandwiches and cakes. Checkpoint “3” at Staylittle serves a full breakfast to all those walking the full distance and checkpoint “7” at Llandinam serves lunch. This enables walkers to travel light, only having to carry suitable clothing and water between the checkpoints. This year’s event will take place on Saturday 18 June, and the Rotary’s nominated charity is the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales Appeal.
