A TROTTING horse enthusiast from Aberystwyth is said to be “over the moon” after a horse he helped train won a million-dollar race in the USA at the weekend.
Gareth Wyn Dowse, 35, has been instrumental in training Huntsville, the three-year-old record-breaking horse which won the world-famous Meadowlands Pace in New Jersey on Saturday night – winning a share of $1m for Ray Schnittker, the family-run stables in Goshen, New York State.
Former Llwyn yr Eos and Penglais School pupil, Gareth Wyn said: “The initial feeling immediately after the race was over was relief of getting the job done.
“By the time I got to the winner’s circle, it was just extreme happiness and trying to savour the moment.
“Normally I’m just so busy you don’t have time to reflect until the year is over.
“Also there’s just so much work that’s gone in to getting to the race, let alone winning it.
“I didn’t get to think about it much yesterday because I was back down in NYC racing four more horses, but today I watched the race again over breakfast and the same feelings from Saturday were recaptured.”
