Armed with bags and litter pickers, a troupe of children have helped do their bit for the local environment, clearing rubbish from Barmouth Beach.

Children from Oasis Nursery embarked on a beach clean last week, collecting and separating recyclable and non-recyclable rubbish to help keep Barmouth’s golden sands litter-free.

The beach-clean came after nursery pupils had been learning about recycling and the environment, which sparked an enthusiasm for taking better care of their immediate landscape.

A popular destination for tourists during the summer months, Barmouth Beach tends to acquire a variety of rubbish from visitors, which can be inconvenient as well as affecting the picturesque surroundings.

The children received a talk from the Cambrian Beach Guardians, a group dedicated to cleaning up Gwynedd’s beaches and organising communal beach cleans in the area, the next day about what they had found and how they help take better care of the beaches.

The beach clean turned out to be a success, and provided a real lesson in looking after the local surroundings.

Claire Tyrrell, manager of Oasis Nursery, said: “The children had a fantastic time and we are planning to hold more beach cleans with our wonderful mini helpers.”
