NEW Quay town councillors are renewing their fight against plans to turn one of the town’s most iconic pubs into apartments.

Two years ago, an online petition set up after the brewery, S A Brain, announced plans to convert the Dolau Inn into hotel accommodation, attracted over 500 signatures.

The traditional pub, which dates back to the 1750s, is situated on the Dylan Thomas Trail while ‘the Cwtch’ was said to have been Thomas’ wife Caitlin’s favourite bar.

Now town councillors are renewing the fight against S A Brain’s plans, which they feel are part of a growing trend in the town to convert former retail premises into residential homes or flats.

“It’s one of the oldest pubs in town, dating back to the 1750s and people don’t want to see it go,” Cllr Julian Evans told the Cambrian News.

New Quay Town Council is objecting to the application for change of use on the grounds it goes against the Local Development Plan, which guards against the loss of retail premises.
