Madam,
The Bishop of Menevia is labouring under a serious misapprehension when he states that the Vatican will not allow St Winefride’s church to be reopened. The truth is that the Vatican has rejected appeals which alleged that the church closure by the bishop in 2012 was unjustified, stating, “the question is settled and will not be reopened”. Even the bishop must agree that there is an important difference between reopening a question and reopening a church.
There is nothing to prevent any bishop from reopening a church, if circumstances justify it. It is not Rome’s decision. It is a matter for the bishop.
Yours etc, Laurie Wright, Dan-y-Coed, Aberystwyth.
