DEMOLITION work has been taking place at a prime Aberystwyth town centre site owned by supermarket chain Aldi, sparking confusion over whether the company is still looking to open a store in the town.

The former Cambrian Garage on Park Avenue was demolished by workmen last week and the empty former Kwik Save supermarket is expected to be demolished in January.

In 2011, Aldi was granted planning permission for a store with a hotel on upper floors above the store.

But the company said in 2014 that the development had stalled because a hotel chain could not be found to take over the upper floors.

That permission expires in April 2016.

Since then the site has been put up for sale by Aldi, although there was confusion over whether the company owned the site or whether it still belonged to Ceredigion Council.

The 1.2 acre site is still listed on the company’s website as being for sale.
