PLANS have been revealed to lower the speed limit around the primary school campus in Machynlleth.

The proposals would see a 20mph limit imposed outside the former Machynlleth CP School, now a part of the Ysgol Bro Hyddgen all-through school in the town.

Although in its early stages, changes to speed limits outside the school are being considered as part of the second round of proposals being looked at by the Welsh Government “to provide variable speed limits on the trunk roads around schools where 20mph speed limit are not currently in place”.

In Machynlleth it is proposed to introduce a mandatory 20mph speed limit along the whole length of Craigfryn, and Maesnewydd will become a 20mph zone, “as there is existing traffic calming in situ making the zone self-enforcing”, a report said.

Machynlleth councillor and school governor Michael Williams has welcomed the proposals and called for the plans to go further.

“I would like to see, as many would, the existing zebra crossing changed into a light-controlled pelican crossing.”

Any finalised plans will be put out to consultation.
