PORTHMADOG FC had two reasons to celebrate following the massive Welsh football victory on Saturday night.

After watching Wales’ 1-0 win over Austria in their World Cup qualifying campaign at the Cardiff City Stadium, the Porthmadog club was named as the country’s best ‘Fun Football Provider’.

Gethin Jones, a coach at the club, was thrilled with the club’s achievement, especially as it was the first year Porthmadog had entered the competition.

He said: “It means everything to win this award because so much hard work has gone on behind the scenes.

“We saw so many Welsh legends, we met Ashley Williams, Chris Coleman, Wayne Hennessey, Ryan Giggs, James Chester... the list goes on.

“We even saw Ben Woodburn after he scored his debut goal, he went straight over to his family, he was almost in tears bless him.

“It was a great event and we’re all very pleased with what we’ve achieved. It’s vitally important we make football fun, for many of the kids it’s their first taste of football.

“If they’re playing, and smiling, then they’re a lot more likely to take up football with a local team which is obviously what we want.

“It’s great from a social perspective too, we had one kid come in recently who didn’t know anyone – he left with a lot more friends, it’s fantastic for that.”See this week's north editions for the full story, in shops and online now
