Aberystwyth posties are taking on the Welsh three peaks challenge to fundraise for a children’s cancer charity and thank them for their vital support for Rufus Palmer and his family.

A team of postmen from Aberystwyth will be completing the Welsh three peaks challenge, which includes Snowdon, Cader Idris, and Pen y Fan, this May to raise money for Latch.

Latch is a Welsh children’s cancer charity that provides vital support for children diagnosed with cancer and their families, like eight-year-old Rufus Palmer, from Aberystwyth, who relapsed with Leukaemia in November last year.

Rob Crumpler is one of the postmen taking part in the challenge: “We have chosen latch this year because of the support they have given to Rufus Palmer and his family recently.

“A couple of us know members of his family so we thought this would be a great cause.

“Were all a little nervous about this one because a lot could go wrong up on the mountains but we’re excited and up for the challenge! We added the 10 hour climbing time target to push us that little bit more.”

This is the second charity challenge the team, which includes Rob, James Shields, Jamie Martin, Thomas Kerton, Huw ‘Coach’ Griffiths, Rob Makaruk and Sion ‘Minty’ Jenkin, have taken on.

On 23 May 2021, they walked from New Quay to Aberystwyth to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

“The team doing the climb is the same as last year”, Rob continued, “we’re just a group of friends who work together at Royal Mail, Aberystwyth.

“Obviously we did the coastal walk challenge last year in aid of Great Ormond Street and it was during that walk that we decided we should make it a yearly thing.

“Last year’s challenge was difficult but a lot of fun to be honest, even though the weather turned about half way into it and we got absolutely drenched.

“We did it in just under eight hours too, which we were all really happy with, and raised £1,700 in total.”
