Madam.
Some weeks ago, I communicated through your letters page about the care of patients in the community with dementia and the lack of regular ongoing support.
I am pleased to report that I have had a most helpful meeting with MP Ben Lake (together with Cllr Brian Davies, who was also most supportive). Mr Lake promised some investigative follow-up with significant departments.
However, we await comment from the Alzheimer’s Society, which appears to have withdrawn regular support (we are informed that Hywel Dda Health Board provides funding for this purpose).
Also, there was the follow-up letter from Jenny Higgins about The Forget Me Not Club, which meets in the Ray Ceredigion centre in Aberaeron every Friday. This and the helpline operated by the Admiral Nurses (0800 8886678) remains the only ongoing support for the “forgotten” people (pun intended) and their carers who suffer from the cruel and debilitating condition of dementia. Indeed, the whole family suffers.
I remain hopeful that the situation will improve and I will continue to campaign on this issue. I am grateful to the Cambrian News for helping to provide some light on a dark and uncertain pathway.
Yours etc,
Lesley Pitchford, Felinfach.
