Cllr Talat Chaudhri’s letter of 25 March does indeed serve one useful purpose in that the voters of Aberystwyth Central, Rheidol and Penparcau do at least now know, who has been appointed on their behalf to represent them, on Aberystwyth Town Council,by the Plaid Cymru group!
His letter is headed up“All councillors are valued colleagues”. I very much concur with that, and indeed he will recall that I myself, in my letter, praised all those who seek public office, including the newly appointed town councillors. I wish the new councillors well.
However, what Cllr Chaudhri cannot dispute is that on two occasions since 2017, the Plaid Cymru group have used their majority to replace Liberal Democrat councillors by members of Plaid Cymru with seemingly scant regard to the wishes of the electorate. This isn’t exactly a practice to encourage new applicants to the council.Could Cllr Choudhri provide any example in recent years of any co-option which hasn’t involved a Plaid Cymru member?
He ends on a consensual note and cites the election of a Liberal Democrat mayor. Yes, the mayor is indeed an excellent councillor, but as mayor, he is also now a neutral one.
Liberal Democrats also believe in collaborative politics, but one that is grounded in a respect for the wishes of the electorate, not party political greed.
