This year’s Sesiwn Fawr is aiming to tackle the plastic problem by introducing reusable glasses.
Plastic waste has become a major problem at any festival or event nowadays.
For safety’s sake drinks aren’t served in your usual glass pint, so single-use plastic glasses have become the norm. This in turn contributes towards the plastic problem that is affecting the world.
“Plastic waste is something that has concerned us for a number of years,” acknowledges Guto Dafydd, chair of Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau committee.
“A ‘new’ glass is given for every drink and the used ‘glasses’ just go to waste.
“This year, however, we have secured a stock of branded, re-useable plastic glasses that festival goers can ‘rent’ and use throughout the weekend. Before returning home they will simply be given the choice of either keeping it as a souvenir, or be returned their deposit. Any profit will go to a charity of Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau’s choice.
Each and every pub in Dolgellau have bought into the scheme and will serve anyone with a Sesiwn Fawr ‘glass’.
“I think it’s a brilliant idea,” says Gwenno Burrough, a publican at The Unicorn.
“This is a brilliant way of reducing waste instead of contributing towards the ever-increasing problem of plastic waste.
“We’ve all seen reports about all the plastic going to waste in the world. It’s nice to think that we can do our own little bit to help the problem in Dolgellau during Sesiwn Fawr weekend.”
