A SINGING group from Aberystwyth will finally get the chance to see themselves on screen when their postponed episode of a TV talent show airs this weekend.

Elinor Powell’s Sgarmes beat hundreds of groups from all over the country to win a place on Pitch Battle, BBC One’s new primetime Saturday night show which sees rival musical groups face-off against each other for a place in the live final.

Sgarmes’ episode had been due to open the series on 17 June, but the Grenfell Tower fire in London led to a two-week postponement.

A statement issued by the BBC read: “Following the tragic fire in London, due to song lyrics and themes, the decision has been taken to replace the original opening episode of Pitch Battle with another.”

Although they had been looking forward to seeing the show, Sgarmes agreed with the decision, as their founder and musical director, Elinor Powell, explained.

“We were completely in agreement when the horrendous events in west London were emerging,” she said. “It would have been totally inappropriate.”

Each episode of the new programme, which is presented by Mel Giedroyc, sees six groups perform for judges Gareth Malone and Kelis, as well as guest judges including Will Young, Chaka Khan and Seal.

The groups pull out-all-the-stops with their Showstopper songs, Riff Offs, Solos and Final Battles.

Speaking about Sgarmes’ Pitch Battle experience, Elinor said: "We’re so incredibly excited for having even got this far!

“When we auditioned back in February this year along with almost a thousand other vocal groups from around the UK, I don’t think any of us in our wildest dreams thought we would actually make it onto the series and be appearing on national primetime TV in front of millions of viewers.

“It means such a lot to all of us to be the only Welsh group in the entire series and we’re really hoping to have the whole of Wales behind us on Saturday night. Our family and friends have been amazing so far and we’re really hoping to make them proud. We can’t give away too much but please watch the show - we’d be so grateful to everyone!”

Sgarmes will watch the show together with family and friends at a place close to their hearts.

Elinor said: “We’ve chosen to watch it at Aberystwyth Rugby Club as it’s such a special night for us and it’s where we have rehearsed for more than a decade.”

Watch Sgarmes on Pitch Battle this Saturday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
