COLLEAGUES of a hugely popular Aberystwyth shop worker have helped raise a “large amount of money” for his family following his shock death a fortnight ago.

Tributes poured in for Robert Samuel Davies, from Penparcau, after he died suddenly at his home on 30 August, at the age of 42.

Workmates at the Spar, on Terrace Road, came together last week to raise money for Mr Davies’ family, with collection buckets placed at the tills. And on Wednesday, all staff wore fancy dress in tribute to Mr Davies, who was a keen amateur actor and big fan of fancy dress.

Speaking on Friday, Darren Rees, Spar assistant manager, said: “We are just drawing to an end now, but it has gone really well and we have had great support. “Customers have expressed their shock and sadness but the fund-raising has been excellent.”

While the store did not want to give an exact figure on how much was raised, Darren said a “large amount of money had been raised” as part of the fundraising efforts.

Sandra Isaac, Coleg Ceredigion’s Aberystwyth campus director, said: “We were saddened to hear of the passing of Robert who had been a student at Coleg Ceredigion over a period of nine years.

“He had inspired staff with his dedication and determination to succeed in achieving his qualifications and continued with his studies until he reached the goal he had set himself."
