A 23-STRONG stag group from Aberystwyth made international news when they had to dodge huge anti-capitalist protests during the G20 summit in Hamburg.

Speaking to the Cambrian News this week, Dylan Lewis, best man to groom-to-be Dafydd Davies, from Penrhyncoch, said the group knew they were in for an interesting weekend when they arrived at Helmut Schmidt Airport shortly before US president Donald Trump.

Dylan, who is to be joint best man with Anthony Parry, said: “We did actually land at the same time as Donald Trump. We landed at around 3pm on Thursday and as we were walking through the terminal we could see on the TV screens that Air Force One was coming down the runway.

“He had about six Chinook helicopters escorting his train after he left the airport.”

The G20 summit in Hamburg, where leaders of the 20 most powerful countries in the world were gathering for talks, was subject to intense anti-capitalist protesting, including a protest called Welcome to Hell that quickly turned into widespread rioting and car-burning.

The German media was very interested in the stag group, as Dylan explained.

“We first realised when a local German person came up to us and said we were on Spiegel Online — the national newspaper’s website.

“They had spread it around Hamburg and people were saying we were famous because we had been tweeted on this feed.”

Asked whether they knew the G20 would be on at the same time, Dylan said: “We did, funnily enough. We thought ‘we are just going to go there to a couple of bars, what’s the worst that could happen?’.”
