TRIBUTES have been paid to a former mayor who has passed away at the age of 86.

Thomas Melfydd George served on Cardigan Town Council for 14 years and was the town mayor in 2007/08 and was well known for his local service, having also sat on Ferwig Community Council for 20 years.

Mr George sadly passed away on 2 November following a lengthy illness and Wynford Jones, the clerk of Cardigan Town Council, paid tribute to Mr George for his work for his local community.

He said: “It is with sadness that news broke of the passing of Thomas Melfydd George aged 86 years following a long illness.

“He was born in Moylegrove and attended local schools, but left those melancholy establishments at 13 years of age to return to work on the land that he loved so much.

“Melfydd was well known in many circles and was a man of the people with strong links to all Welsh groups and associations.

“He was a proud Welshman and a staunch Christian who supported and preached in many local chapels of all denominations for over 50 years."
