Tributes have poured in today to former Ceredigion MP, Lord Elystan Morgan.
As well as representing Cardiganshire for eight years in the 1960s and 70s, Lord Morgan was a staunch campaigner for a Welsh Parliament and became a member of the House of Lords in 1981.
He was also a former president of Aberystwyth University between 1997 and 2007.
He died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday morning aged 88.
The vice-chancellor of Aberystwyth University, Prof Elizabeth Treasure, paid tribute to Lord Elystan, saying: “It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of Lord Elystan Morgan.
“A former president of the university, Lord Elystan’s contribution as a tireless public servant to Wales and to our University has been enormous.
“His vast knowledge and wisdom, warm demeanour and playful humour made a lasting impression on those who met him, and he took an active interest in the work of the university and the Department of Law and Criminology, where he was himself a student, providing support and advice when asked but never intruding.
“On a personal note I am most grateful to him for his warm welcome and words of advice on my arrival at Aberystwyth, and for his support, despite his failing health, during my time here.
“As a university we are thankful for everything he has given us and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family at this difficult time.”
Current Ceredigion MP Ben Lake said: “A sad day, as Ceredigion loses one of her brightest sons. Lord Elystan-Morgan was a rare figure in the political world: a statesman of intellect and integrity.
"My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
“He always made his case with an eloquence founded on an unshakeable belief in its merits, and a masterful understanding of the detail. His capacity for kindness and good humour, even during the most divisive of political debates, is something to which we should all aspire.”
Conservative MS for neighbouring Preseli Pembrokeshire, Paul Davies, said: “Very sad to hear this news. Even though my father was a staunch Conservative, he always used to say that Elystan Morgan was the best constituency MP Cardiganshire ever had.”
BBC newsreader Huw Edwards also paid tribute saying: “Cymro balch, datganolwr cadarn, a gwleidydd abl. Colled i Gymru ar ei ôl.
“Lord Elystan-Morgan made an immense contribution to public life in Wales. A great loss. Diolch amdano.”
