LOCAL MP Liz Saville Roberts made a special trip to Passchendaele in Flanders on Monday to remember Wales’ fallen soldiers 100 years on.

She was joined by Plaid Cymru leader, Leanne Wood and both attended the centenary commemoration of the battle of Passchendaele in Flanders, Belgium on Monday, where Welsh war poet Hedd Wyn lost his life.

Presenting the official respects of Plaid Cymru, the leaders releases a joint statement: “One hundred years ago, a three-month battle began which would impact Wales in the deepest possible way.

“The poignancy and tragedy of those events are well-known at home, not least because the loss of Hedd Wyn came to symbolise the loss of so many families, and the waste of a generation.

“The constituencies we represent committed thousands of men to this campaign and to the wider conflict.

“Every village, town and city had sons, brothers and fathers who went away and did not return to their homes or their families. The names of those never to return are etched on the memorials across our nation; but remembrance must also be an act which is ongoing and which is inherited by our future generations at home in Wales."
