ABERYSTWYTH striker Alex Samuel will be playing in the Championship next season after his Wycombe Wanderers side beat Oxford United to secure promotion last night.
The former Penglais pupil, who started his career with Aberystwyth Town aged 16 after working his way through the ranks of the Seasider’s academy system, started League One play-off final on Monday evening and a 2-1 win against Oxford United secured Wycombe’s place in the Championship next season.
Anthony Stewart and Joe Jacobson were on target as Wycombe Wanderers earned promotion to the Championship with a 2-1 win over Oxford United at Wembley Stadium.
The Blues took an early lead when Anthony Stewart headed home.?Oxford levelled in fortuitous fashion when Mark Sykes’ cross looped over Ryan Allsop and into the net, but Wanderers weren’t to be denied their night of glory as Jacobson converted a penalty following a foul on Onyedinma to seal Wycombe’s place in the Championship.
Taking to Twitter today, Alex wrote: “We have done it! On our way to the Championship!!...God is so awesome! Thankyou Jesus.”
Alex started out in the youth setup at Aberystwyth Town and earned a move to Swansea City in 2015, enjoying loan spells with Greenock Morton and Newport County before making a permanent switch to Stevenage.
It was his performance playing for Boro against Wycombe in December 2017 that first caught Ainsworth’s eye, and the Blues boss swooped for the youngster following his release from the Hertfordshire club last summer, with Alex going on to win Wanderers’ Young Player of the Year prize.
