BONT took a big step towards winning the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League title when they registered a crucial 2-1 win over title rivals Bow Street Reserves last weekend.
Their success at Cae Piod moved them three points clear of the previously unbeaten Magpies, with one league game to go, at home to Tregaron on 19 May.
A defensive mix up saw Shaun Jones tap in to an empty net for Bow Street on 20 minutes, but Ben Lewis and Andrew Carree both went close to levelling.
With 10 minutes of the half to go, a free kick from Lee Jones caught the keeper out, and he deflected the ball in to the path of Sion Jones to tap in the equaliser.
In the second half, Trevor Jenkins made a fine save to keep the visitors in the game, but with 15 minutes left Bont started to apply the pressure as Fergus Morris and Ben Lewis both went close.
Bont were then awarded a penalty, but last week’s hat-trick hero Carree stepped up and fired over the crossbar - and it looked like their title hopes had been dealt a huge blow.
Bont, however, continued to press, forcing a succession of corners, and with four minutes left, a Ben Lewis corner was powerfully met by Lee Jones who jumped higher than the home defence to score.
Meanwhile, in the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League division two, Penparcau registered a solid 4-0 win over vsitors Aberdyfi, with Jordan Perry netting twice.
Perry set Arky on their way when he scored after only 15 minutes, and he completed his brace soon after, following a lovely through ball by Joe Duggan.
Aberdyfi fought back well, but when Duggan managed to break an attack down, a pin-point ball over the top picked out the diagonal run of Rhys Wynne Davies who turned his player on the edge of the box and fired into the top corner for 3-0.
Within 10 minutes of the restart, the ball fell to youngster Ben Davies on the edge of the box, and he fired home to make it 4-0, and there was no way back for Dyfi.
In the Cambrian Tyres Second Division Trophy, Llanilar lost 4-1 to Tywyn Bryncrug Reserves, with a Ben Holt hat-trick and a Luke Rickard goal sealing their win.
