BALA Town’s four-match winning run was ended by Welsh Premier League leaders The New Saints on Tuesday night, as the visitors struck three times in the second half to register a solid 3-0 success at rainswept Maes Tegid.
The fixture had originally been postponed due to snow, and this time around the weather was again a major concern.
In extremely wet and windy conditions, the first half especially proved to be very difficult for both sides, and scoring chances proved to be few and far between.
Ryan Brobbel’s run down the left in the opening minutes saw the ball in cleared by Evan Horwood, as the visitors tried to stamp their authority on the game.
At the other end, a half chance fell to Lee Owens, whose cross-shot was caught by keeper Paul Harrison, and prior to the interval both sides had opportunities.
Greg Draper’s effort from around 10 yards out hit the bar, following a ball in from Chris Marriott down the left, and the rebound was blasted over the bar.
Just a minute later, it was keeper Paul Harrison’s turn to be involved as he tipped the ball over for a corner kick.
In the dying seconds, Draper had the best chance of the half, following a great ball in from Jon Routledge, but a tremendous interception from Stuart Jones denied the league’s leading scorer a goal.
The second half was just 10 minutes old when the the deadlock was finally broken, as a shot from Brobbel deflected off Marriott on the way through, and it ended up in the back of Ashely Morris’s net.
Just a minute later, a Stuart Jones tackle on the edge of the box resulted in a free kick, which Brobblel drove home low into the bottom corner to double the lead.
Bala custodian Morris pulled off a great save from Brobbel in the 74th minute, as he pushed the ball behind for a corner.
The two goals seemed to take the wind out of Bala’s sails, but the Lakesiders kept battling, with Ian Sheridan curling wide.
The Saints also created a few chances, with a Blaine Hudson header hitting the outside roof of the net, before they finally sealed the three points in added time.
A long ball bounced off the head of Jamie Mullan, and dropped to substitute Wes Fletcher, who fired the ball home.
