A SUPERB late strike from Ifan Jones saw Tregaron Turfs win the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League Cup with a 2-1 win over division one champions Bow Street Reserves at Park Avenue on Tuesday evening.
The Turfs, who had finished third in the race for the title, had denied second-placed Bont the league honours three days earlier by beating them in their final game, thereby ensuring that the league shield went to Bow Street.
The Magpies’ hopes of a league and cup double, however, were to also be shattered by Tregaron, who produced another fine performance to secure the silverware in a keenly-fought final.
Gareth Davies opened the scoring for the Turfs in the first half, but Bow Street fought back onto level terms through veteran Pete James, and the match was finely poised going into the closing minutes.
With extra-time looming, however, it was Tregaron who snatched victory with a superb strike from Ifan Jones, and there was to be no way back for the division one champions.
It was Turfs’ keeper Sam Jones, the brother of match-winner Ifan, who lifted the Cambrian Tyres League Cup, to the delight of the Tregaron management and supporters.
There was some consolation for Bow Street, however, as skipper Stephen Harrison was presented with the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League division one shield.
The Magpies had another shot at silverware when they faced division two champions Tywyn/Bryncrug Reserves in the final of the Newman Memorial Trophy on Friday night.Ian Evans scored twice, with Stephen Harrison, Shaun Jones, Osian Rees-Jones, Osian Burrell and Joseff Williams finding the net as the Magpies registered an emphatic 7-1 win.Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth LeagueBONT missed out on a second successive Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District League division one title as they slipped to a 3-2 defeat to local rivals Tregaron Turfs in their last game of the season.
Bont needed a point at home to their old adversaries to claim back-to-back titles, but the defeat saw Bow Street Reserves win the championship on goal difference.
Tregaron were well up for spoiling the party, and they put their recent poor form behind them to take the game to Bont.
They were rewarded after 10 minutes as Cerith Davies slotted home from the edge of the box, to put Turfs 1-0 up - and although Bont pressed and forced a few corners, they couldn’t get the equaliser.
Things got worse for Bont as Llyr Davies found Carwyn Earey to slot home from close range and double the visitors’ lead, but five minutes later Bont hit back as Charlie Parr fired an unstoppable shot from 20 yards to make it 2-1 at the break.
Five minutes into the second half, however, Trevor Jenkins tipped a shot straight in to the path of Dylan Davies, who found an unmarked Earey for his second goal.
Bont pushed on and they got back into the game with 10 minutes left through Glyndwr Hughes, who headed home a corner, and in the final few minutes Bont had three promising free kicks, but couldn’t trouble the visiting goalkeeper.
Bow Street Reserves had taken the title race to the wire with a 4-0 win over Aberystwyth University Reserves at Cae Piod in their final league game on Thursday.
Justin Quinn scored twice, along with goals by Ian Evans and Nicky Smith for the Magpies.
