BORTH and Ynyslas Golf Club’s Zach Galliford made history by bringing the Welsh Amateur Championships back to Dyfed for the first time in over 30 years.

Taking place at Southerndown Golf Club, Bridgend, over 80 golfers competed in two strokeplay rounds with the top 32 going through to the matchplay stages.

Zach, 21, enjoyed rounds of 72 and 67 to ease his way through to the final 32.

On his way to the final he beat Ioan Drosingos Jones (2 holes), Mitchell Reid (3&2, Richard Hooper 5&4 and had a walk over in the semi final due to an injury to Jonathan Bale.

In the 36-hole final his opponent was Owen Edwards from Llanwern Golf Club.

Zach started off brightly beingfour4 under through 10 holes and 5 up on Edwards, and ended the morning round with a 4 up lead.

As expected, Owen fought back in the afternoon session with a stretch of three birdies in a row, to claw back Zach’s advantage to one.

Zach continued to have a slender advantage on the back nine until it was all square by the 34th hole.
