MATHEW Evans has taken the honours in two prestigious ‘Board’ competitions at Aberystwyth Golf Club in the past month.

In the Club Championship, played over 36 holes off scratch, Evans won comfortably, returning two excellent rounds of 74 and 75 for a total of 149. Runner-up was Dai Blair with 78+74 152, beating Jeremy Edmunds 77+76 153 in third place, and Anthony Griffiths 79+75 154 in fourth.

On the same day the Ken Joel Cup under handicap rules saw Mathew Evans’ round of 74-6-68, with a superior back nine, beat JW Davies’ also with 74-6-68. In third place was Nigel Southgate 81-12-69, beating Dylan Morris’ 75-6-69 on countback.

In the other prime competition at Aberystwyth, the JR James Shield was contested over 36 holes on consecutive days.Mathew Evans again came to the fore with two impressive rounds of 71-5-66 and 73-5-68 for a two round total 134.

Hard on his heels as runner-up was Jac Rimmer, who led after the first round with 68-3-65, but missed out with 73-3-70 in the second for a return of 65 plus 70-135, losing by just one shot after 36 holes.

In third place, and another shot back, with two rounds of 70 and 66 for a total of 136, was Martin Haynes, beating on countback Daniel Basnett, who had two rounds of 69 plus 67, for a 136 total.Read the full report in this week's Aberystwyth edition
