DINAS Mawddwy’s Elfyn Evans has been installed in the betting for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award after sealing a dramatic World Rally Championship title success.

The Toyota Gazoo Racing driver made history by becoming the first British World Rally Champion since Colin McRae in 1995, capping a season-long battle that went down to the wire.

Evans held his nerve through a tense title decider, overcoming relentless pressure and setbacks throughout the campaign to finally claim the sport’s biggest prize.

His landmark achievement has not gone unnoticed by bookmakers, with Evans now entering the conversation for one of British sport’s most prestigious individual honours.

William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said: “With Elfyn Evans becoming the first British driver to win the World Rally Championship in 25 years, he has entered the reckoning for this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

“Evans has been added to the SPOTY market at 50/1 but still trails several names in the betting. The likes of Amy Hunt (EVS) and Josh Kerr (5/2) hold strong positions in the market after outstanding seasons on the athletics track.

“However, we have seen British rally drivers make a podium finish for the award in the past - namely 1995 World Rally Championship winner Colin McRae - so there’s certainly precedent to suggest Evans is in with a chance.”
