LAMPETER brother and sister Osian and Beca Roberts both won gold medals for Carmarthen Harriers at the two-day Welsh Athletics Club Championships.
The first day at the Queensway Stadium in Wrexham got off to a great start in the field as both achieved lifetime bests in the first hour.
Osian, a pupil at Ysgol Bro Pedr, cleared a 4cm personal best height of 1.75m to win the Under 15s’ boys high jump after easily clearing the lower heights on his way to securing the gold.
On the other side of the arena, his sister Beca was in Under 17s’ women’s triple jump action, and having jumped 10.87m in the opening round, she went marginally better in her sixth and final jump to finish off with a performance of 10.88m - also improving on her season’s best result.
The following day saw Osian compete in his new triple jump event, and he went over 10 metres to 10.27m on his way to finishing in second place, to complete a gold and silver double for his efforts.
The Carmarthen Harriers club saw 20 members make the long journey north and they won a total of 11 medals, with three gold, five silver and three bronze places.
In the Under 13s’ boys 1500m final, the team took home a silver and a bronze thanks to the duo of Ifan Bowen and Iwan Thomas, with their times of 4.53.37 and 4.59.17 respectively.
On the Sunday, the Harriers’ standout result of the day came in the Under 15s boys’ 3,000m final as Frank Morgan clocked 9.12.65 to not only win the gold, but also set a new club record.
Returning to the track after Saturday’s 1500m, Ifan Bowen was on the start line in the Under 13 boys’ straight 800m final, and he won his second silver medal with a time of 2.23.95.
Dafydd Jones in the under 17 men’s race just missed out on a second medal of the weekend in fourth, but came away with a new personal best time of 2.01.17.
In the Under 17s javelin, Morgan Batten secured a silver medal and also a personal best throw of 46.02m.
• In the Under 15 girls’ long jump, Zara Evans of Ysgol Henry Richard, Tregaron, who had been named as athlete of the match at the Ceredigion Secondary Schools Athletics Championships, produced three legal jumps on her way to a best of 4.49m, performed in round one.
