MOLD hit Dolgellau with a second half blitz, crossing for four tries, to seal a fine win after coming back from a 7-15 deficit at the interval to claim a 32-20 bonus point win in Division One North.

There was no hint of what was to come later on in the match as Dolgellau started the match strongly, and outstanding second row Bryn Jones crashed over following a surging run from No 8 Rob Lewis after five minutes of play, having already come so close three minutes previously.

Stand-off Gerwyn Thomas put Dolgellau 7-0 ahead with the conversion.

Mold hit back immediately from the kick-off. A clean break by centre James Portsmouth saw scrum half James Kirby going over the line, and stand-off Nick Hughes converted to level the scores.

Dolgellau’s Gerwyn Thomas, however, then put Dolgellau 10-7 ahead with a penalty goal, after a quarter of an hour.

The hosts kept pressing and a minute into injury time at the end of the half, their reward came with Bryn Jones’ second try of the game after skipper Rhys Roberts was hauled down just short of the try line.

Dolgellau looked comfortable at this stage, with a 15-7 lead at the interval.

Mold started the second period transformed, and began asking serious questions of the home defence. Only two minutes in, centre James Portsmouth went over in the right corner to make it 15-12.

Five minutes later, from a scrum five metres out, blind-side flanker Chris Ellis crashed over to put Mold ahead for the first time of the match at 15-17.

Going into the last quarter of the match Mold broke from halfway and openside Dylan Payne sprinted to score a try, out in the left corner, to make the score 15-22.

The ever alert scrum half, James Kirby, created an opening for centre James Portsmouth to go over for his second try of the game, and replacement Jack Pearson converted to put Mold 15-29 ahead.

Dolgellau’s replacement wing Dafydd Roberts, making his senior debut, made ground down left side, and from the resulting drive skipper Rhys Roberts went over to give Dolgellau some hope with the score 20-29 with nine minutes left.

Mold were in no mood to let Dolgellau salvage a losing bonus point, and they added a penalty from wing Cai Edwards with four minutes remaining, to complete the scoring at 20-32 and end another disappointing second half from Dolgellau.
