Aberystwyth Youth 24

Whitland Youth 20

Aber Youth avenged a 45-7 defeat away from home against Whitland Youth five weeks ago with this very encouraging win at home – their first win of the season.

The hosts made their intentions clear from the outset with a determination and passion they had not demonstrated so far this season.

They dominated in all aspects of play and their confidence grew stronger as the game went on.

Early pressure was rewarded with an unconverted try by Osian Bebb-Worrel.

Good work by Aber’s forwards starved Whitland of possession. Dion James was particularly prominent at breakdowns, well backed up by strong, hard running from fellow forwards Llyr Davies and Owen Jones.

This pressure led to Aber’s second try scored by captain Iwan Morris.

Their threequarters were given plenty of ball by their hard working forwards and it was entirely with the run of play that Morris scored his second try, converted by Euros Lloyd for a 17 – 0 lead.

After all their hard work in the opening half hour Aber went off the boil for a period before half time and Whitland came back into the game.

Their hard work was rewarded with a try just before the break to see Aber lead by 17-5 at the interval.

The second half started with the visitors now showing more confidence and effort and they scored their second try of the afternoon soon after the restart.

Now it was Aber’s turn to show their character and they were rewarded with a try from hard-tackling Alex Spollen, converted by Euros Lloyd to go further ahead by 24-10.

The match then became faster and more competitive as both sides fought for a win.

It was the visitors who gained most from this period as they scored two more unconverted tries to close a closely fought contest at 24-20.

The Aber Youth squad and their coaches fully deserved this win. It was just reward for all the hard work and patience they have shown thus far this season.

With this level of commitment there will be more successes to come in the near future.
