Tony Jones of Blaenplwyf referred in a letter to false allegations made against me over 20 years ago by former Harrods boss, Mohamed Fayed, that I had accepted cash for asking parliamentary questions on his behalf when I was an MP.

Fayed’s false allegations were entirely rejected by the Inland Revenue after a two-year investigation by their top tax forensic accountants, the Special Compliance Office. They looked in minute detail at my financial affairs during the ten tax years 1987-97, armed with an unlimited authority from me to demand confidential information from anyone world-wide.They found that I had received no illicit payments, my tax returns had been honest and complete and I owed no tax. Also, all my parliamentary expenses had been “wholly, exclusively and necessarily incurred” in the performance of my duties - unlike the five Labour MPs sent to prison for fraud and the legion of others who claimed for duck-houses, moat-clearing and piles of manure.If elected as AM on 5 May, I shall be a conscientious and strong voice for my old university town of Aberystwyth and the whole of mid and west Wales.
