Madam,

This week I got a ticket for doing 37mph on the 30mph stretch through Southgate, Aberystwyth on a Sunday lunchtime. You might think I’d be cross about this, but no. I applaud the police for being out at a time to catch the day-dreaming motorist like me, and the councillors who have got the area such zealous support. It was my mistake, but the mechanism was in place to catch me.

Compare this excellent service to what we have here in Blaenplwyf. We have a 40mph through the village, but we never see a speed van. Everyone knows this and people hurtle through at whatever speed they fancy. Noise pollution or risk to children is of no interest.

Neither the police commissioner’s office nor my Llanfarian-based councillor showed any interest (and my, what a well-enforced 30mph zone Llanfarian has).

So congratulations to the residents of Penparcau and Llanfarian for getting something done, and the residents of Capel Bangor for getting those illuminating signs showing speeds. If anyone can explain how we can get the speed limits enforced in Blaenplwyf - without waiting until someone is killed - we’d be very grateful to hear.

Yours etc

Tony Jones
