TEIFI Valley firefighters had to respond to a deluge of flooding calls as recent heavy rains returned with a vengeance on Thursday night.

At the peak of Storm Desmond, which saw coastal villages lashed by winds of up to 70 mph, two separate groups of people had to be rescued from trapped vehicles.

Mid and West Wales Fire Service said their crews had to rescue the occupants of a vehicle stranded by floodwaters at Cenarth Bridge just before 7pm.

Then, at 8.15pm, firefighters were called in to aid four elderly people stuck in a car on the Gwbert Road, near Cardigan.

Some roads were also forced to close, with motorists being warned to take extra care due to surface flooding while Natural Resources Wales issued several flood alerts.

Fire crews from New Quay, Aberaeron, Aberystwyth, Lampeter and Tregaron were all called out as 15-20 homes were reportedly flooded around the A487 Ceredigion coast road.
