CEREDIGION’s athletes returned with a haul of medals from the two-day Dyfed Secondary Schools Athletics Championships, held at Johnstown, Carmarthen.

Notable individual performances included Beca Roberts of Lampeter’s Ysgol Bro Pedr winning double gold in the Middle Girls’ 80m hurdles and triple jump, whilst Lili Church of Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron also won gold medals in both the Middle Girls’ javelin and high jump.

Zara Evans, of Tregaron’s Ysgol Henry Richard, also won two gold medals in the Year Nine Girls, in the long jump and triple jump, as well as bronze in the 100m.

With spaces at the Welsh Schools National Championships up for grabs in the Junior, Middle and Senior categories, Ceredigion is set to be well-represented in the Dyfed Schools team at Cardiff International Sports Stadium on Saturday, 6 July.

The regional championships saw around 350 athletes from Pembrokeshire, Brianne, Llanelli and Ceredigion compete, with the top four finishers from the respective area championships in track and field action.

Competition got underway at a rain-soaked Carmarthen on the Friday, including the 300m and 400m hurdles, 1,000m walk and 3,000m, and hammer in the field.

Saturday saw the 100m, 200m, 300m and 400m sprints, the hurdles, and the 800m, 1,500m and steeplechase on the track, along with the long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot, javelin and discus being held on all four corners of the field.

The Dyfed Schools team for the Welsh Schools Track and Field Championships to be held on Saturday, 6 July at Cardiff International Sports Stadium, was selected straight after the Championships.

It will feature teams from Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff and Vale, Dyfed, Eryri, Glamorgan Valleys, North East Wales, Powys and South East Wales, and will once again double as a part of the Urdd’s Gemau Cymru Multi-Sport Festival.
