TWO teenager sailors from Ysgol Bro Teifi, Llandysul, delivered outstanding performances at the British Youth Sailing (BYS) Regional Junior Championships on 21-22 June held in Dale, Pembrokeshire.

Competing in the ILCA (International Laser Class Association) dinghy class, Bronwen Thomas, 18, and Steffan Williams, 16, claimed the top two spots in the RYA Cymru organised event.

Bronwen, from Rhydlewis, was first overall and first female sailor and Steffan, from New Quay was second overall and first male sailor.

The championships are annual events held across the UK’s home nations as part of the RYA’s commitment to developing young sailors.

There were eight different classes of sailing boats and windsurfers with young people from across Wales coming together to compete.

Both sailors are also members of the RYA Cymru ILCA national sailing team.

Bronwen said: “It was a great competition and I’m very pleased to take the win.

“The winds were light on Saturday that suited me but I had to try and keep hold of my lead on day two as the winds were stronger on Sunday and suited Steffan, so it was very tight on points at the end.

“It was a great weekend and amazing to see so many sailors in different dingy classes all coming together.”

Steffan added, “I’m very happy with my performance coming second by just one point!

“It was very close. It was a great competition, and I want to say thank you to all the organisers and the volunteers. It was great to get back to competitive racing after our exams.”

“Next is the Welsh Open ILCA Championship in Pwllheli at the beginning of July, and then a week of competing at the UK ILCA Nationals in August at the National Sailing Academy again in Pwllheli. It’s really good there are so many competitions this year in Wales.”
